SUMMARY:CSSR Annual Conference 2024
DESCRIPTION:CSSR’s annual conference is an open forum for exchange of novel concepts and technology developments within subsurface research that can facilitate the energy transition on the Norwegian continental shelf (NCS). The conference will explore the consequences of switching to variable/uncertain renewable energy supply to power offshore operations. Sessions will spotlight cutting-edge research within petroleum\, CCS and underground energy storage. \nPlease visit the 2024 conference website for more information.

SUMMARY:CSSR Partner workshop 07-08th May 2024
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to the CSSR Partner Workshop 2024! \nWorkshop Date : 7th and 8th May 2024 \nVenue : Clarion Hotel Admiral\, Bergen \nThis year’s partner workshop will map technology maturation and innovation within CSSR. The aim of the workshop is to understand what innovation means for the centre\, and how to identify innovation potential and processes to become spin-offs within the WPs in the centre. Furthermore\, how to reduce the development gap between research and technology. Two topics have been identified for those two days with talks and discussions about: \n\nIntegrating laboratory and field workflows.\nDigital innovations for optimal use of the subsurface\n\nThe program can be found here: Program \nPlease click here to register \nFor further questions\, please contact Centre Manager Maya Havre

SUMMARY:CSSR Joint Industry Workshop in Reservoir Management\, FA 2-Bergen April 16th\, 2024
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to our hybrid joint industry workshop  for focus area 2 at NORCE in Bergen\, 16th April 2024\, from 10:00 to 16:00. \nVenue: Nygårdsgaten 112\, 5008 Bergen. \nPlease register to this link: Registration form for the FA2 Joint Industry workshop \nAgenda : \n \n  \nData-driven approaches to improving modeling\, simulation\, and optimization \nFocus area 2 of the CSSR center covers reservoir management powered by renewable energy. The work packages in this area all involve the use of data-driven methods. We focus on using approximative sub-models for complex processes in subsurface flow\, such as well-reservoir interactions and relative permeability relationships\, and the development of coupling strategies for solving such multi-model problems. Furthermore\, we will develop a cascade of simulation models with varying complexity that can be used for efficient production optimization. A major class of models can be constructed by successive grid coarsening. Central research tasks are calibration of such models and how to utilize the models in gradient-based optimization. \nThis workshop’s purpose is to allow for an exchange of experience and close interaction between the research participants\, operators\, and service providers of CSSR. In addition to short presentations on relevant topics and ongoing work followed by informal discussions and idea-generating work\, we are interested in suggestions and guidance for plans and problem formulations. Furthermore\, we want to address industry-led research to integrate methods into open-source commercial-ready digital tools via Python interfaces. \nWe allow for online participation. The workshop is the day before the SPE Norway conference in Bergen. \nOrganizers Rolf J. Lorentzen (rolo@norceresearch.no)\, Tor Harald Sandve (tosa@norceresearch.no) and Maya Havre (mhav@norceresearch.no). \nIf you have any questions\, please contact Maya Havre (mhav@norceresearch.no). \nBest regards from the organizing team.

SUMMARY:"Living on Hydrogen" seminar
DESCRIPTION:3rd International Seminar “Living on Hydrogen” Microbial Influence on Hydrogen Underground Storage\nRegistration is open! \nWith over 280 registered persons from academia\, industry and governmental institutes\, we had a great success last year with our “Living on Hydrogen” webinar. The research on hydrogen underground storage in general and specifically the role of microbes is still ongoing with many new projects coming up all over Europe and the World. \n“Everybody is talking about the transformative potential of hydrogen as we gradually transition into a sustainable society. As is the case with all energy resources\, finding the best solution to large scale storage remain an indisputable challenge. \nHydrogen underground storage in salt caverns\, reservoirs or aquifers has a big potential to provide long-term storage but these environments are always exposed to subsurface indigenous microorganisms. Which raises the main question of our webinar: What role will they play? \nIn this seminar/conference we want gather interested people on the topic of hydrogen underground storage and the potential impacts triggered by microorganisms.” \nThis free online seminar is aimed towards cross-disciplinary scientists\, operators and industry members\, interested in understanding microbial risks and working on this fascinating topic!

SUMMARY:Webinar: In-situ visualization of microbial hydrogen consumption using high-resolution PET-MRI
DESCRIPTION:The Norwegian research school on hydrogen and hydrogen-based fuels (HySchool) at the University of Bergen invites for a webinar where the CSSR PhD students\, Raymond Mushabe\, will present his research topic. The webinar is open for all interested.  \nLink to the webinar can be found at the bottom of the HySchool website! \n  \n \nRaymond Mushabe\, CSSR PhD student\, UiB \n  \nAbstract: In-situ visualization of microbial hydrogen consumption using high-resolution PET-MRI \nThe efficiency of short- and long-term underground hydrogen storage UHS in subsurface porous media is one of the limiting technical challenges facing the renewable energy industry. The stored H2 is one of the most important electron donors for many subsurface microbial processes\, e.g.\, microbialinduced sulphate reduction and methanogenesis\, which can convert H2 to H2S and CH4\, causing permanent gas loss and H2 contamination. Therefore\, understanding the microbial H2 metabolisms is essential for estimating the storage and withdrawal efficiency in UHS and improving the selection criteria for future storage sites. A halophilic sulfate-reducing stain was used as the model bacterium to quantitatively assess the consumption of H2 in in 6 cm x 1.5 cm sand and glass bead packs. The bacterium can utilize H2 as electron donor and sulfate as electron acceptor producing H2S\, for growth. Besides\, the high accumulation of bacteria can form biofilms and cause pore-clogging. In this study\, state-of-the art visualization techniques were utilized to study hydrogen consumption and bacteria growth in 6 cm x 1.5 cm sand and glass bead packs. A multi-modal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)- positron emission tomography (PET) scanner was used to study both static and dynamic phenomena\, respectively. Sand and glass bead packs were saturated with bacteria solution (a sulphate-reducer oleidesulfovibrio alaskensis)\, both without and in the presence of hydrogen. The whole experiment was conducted under anaerobic conditions for the bacteria to survive and grow. In-situ visualization provided insight into the dynamics of bacterial growth and hydrogen consumption rates: MRI provided information on the spatial fluid saturation at micrometer scale. PET provided fluid displacement dynamics during injection. of brine\, nutrients and bacteria at high temporal resolutions. We\, hence\, observed bacterial growth and fluid flow redistribution at resolutions not previously used to study these phenomena at the core scale.
