Practical Information

Who can apply?
    • PhD candidate currently enrolled in a doctoral programme
    • Junior researchers, including advanced master’s students with relevant experience, recent PhD graduates, and postdoctoral fellows
    • Industry professionals

All atttendees must have a strong command of English, as it is the language of the summer school. 

How to register? 

Registration for in-person is now CLOSED. 

Registration for online attendance is open until June 8th 2026 

Poster presenters

All posters should be prepared using high resolution figures.

The standard size for our poster board is A0 (portrait).

NORCE or UIB do not offer any poster printing services. Participants are expected to arrange their own poster transportation. 

Posters need to be mounted on the morning of June 16th during registration.

Travelling to Bergen

Bergen is located on Norway’s western coast, facing the North Sea. With 270,000 residents, it’s a vibrant city known for its scenic beauty, student life, and cultural scene. Summer temperatures range from 12–25°C, so pack for both sunshine and rain.

The city is easily accessible via:

    • Direct flights from major European cities
    • Train from Oslo
    • Ferry from Hirtshals, Denmark

Norway is part of the Schengen Area:

    • EU/EEA citizens: No visa required
    • Visa-exempt countriesSee official list
    • All others: Must apply for a Schengen visa to Norway

Please contact one of the event managers at NORCE for the letter of invitation required for the visa application. We recommend early application to avoid delay in the approval process. 

Insurance requirements
    • EU/EEA residents: Bring your European Health Insurance Card
    • Non-EU/EEA residents: Must have full travel insurance, including health coverage
Transport from the airport 

Bergen Airport is connected to the city by:

    • Light rail (Bybanen)

Please note that the excursion spots are limited to 60 persons and international attendees will be prioritized on a first come-first serve basis.

For students, recommend to look for local hostel solutions. We recommend the HI Bergen Hostel Montana. It is located right next to the beautiful Uriken mountain and 20 min by public transport to the city center. June is a very popular time for summer schools, please book early!

Weather 

Bergen is known for its rain, but summer also brings sunshine. Expect temperatures between 12–25°C. 

If you plan to spend time in the mountains, you need to bring:

    • Rain jacket and waterproof pants
    • Warm layers and hiking shoes/boots
