About the speaker:
Jakub W. Both is an applied mathematician with great interest in interdisciplinary porous media research, working at the intersection of multiphysics simulations, data integrated modeling, and image based model validation. His research combines advanced numerical methods with high resolution experimental data, with key contributions to the FluidFlower universe and the development of the DarSIA toolbox for multi scale image analysis. He focuses on bridging experimental physics with mathematical modeling to enhance understanding and simulation capabilities of flow and transport in porous media. Jakub received the 2025 SIAM Activity Group on Geosciences Early Career Prize and has been awarded an RCN FRIPRO Young Researcher Talent grant for his project TIME4CO₂. He serves as deputy leader of WP 4/5 of the Centre for Sustainable Subsurface Resources (CSSR).
🔹 Webinar Details
Image‑based analysis is essential for understanding multiphase flow in porous media and creates opportunities to systematically evaluate simulations and link experimental and numerical perspectives. In this webinar, I will present activities within and around CSSR spanning CO₂‑storage experiments in the FluidFlower rig, model validation workflows, and the SPE11 comparative solution project. The unifying theme is quantitative image analysis: for example, by measuring distances between images using optimal‑transport metrics, we can compare entire datasets from repeated experiments, identify structural similarities and differences, and assess variability. The core engine for our computations is DarSIA, an open-source multiscale image‑analysis toolbox that processes raw images like those from FluidFlower experiments, extracts quantitative information, and integrates laboratory and simulation results in a reproducible way. Together, these developments provide means for unified, transparent, and scalable image‑analysis workflows to strengthen validation, accelerate data‑integrated modeling, and support reproducibility in porous‑media research.
