We are delighted to invite you to the third session of the CSSR Webinar Series, a new monthly event hosted by the Centre for Sustainable Subsurface Resources (CSSR).
Title: Underground hydrogen storage in porous media: Microbial controls and multiphase flow
Speaker:Â Raymond Mushabe ( PhD student at CSSR, UiB)
Date & Time:Â October 24th 09:00-10:00 CET
🔹 About CSSR
The Centre for Sustainable Subsurface Resources (CSSR) is a national research centre funded by the Research Council of Norway and a consortium of industry sponsors. CSSR is dedicated to advancing research and innovation in low-emission subsurface applications, with a strong focus on reservoir management, CO₂ storage, and the sustainable use of Norway’s subsurface resources. Our goal is to support the transition to a low-emission society through science-based solutions and collaborative research. Learn more at www.cssr.no.
🔹 Webinar Details
Large-scale deployment of underground hydrogen storage is reliant on understanding the biogeochemical interactions associated with hydrogen injection into porous media reservoirs. In this webinar, the student will present core-flooding experiments that quantify microbial hydrogen consumption under repeatable storage cycles. In situ MRI reveals how microbial activity alters brine properties and flow patterns, contrasting sterile piston-like displacement with channelling in bacterial systems. Finally, neural-network surrogates trained on reservoir simulations rapidly forecast residual hydrogen and withdrawal efficiency, supporting site screening and operational design.
Who Should Attend: This talk will be of particular interest to:
- Researchers and students in geoscience, reservoir engineering, and energy systems
- Industry professionals working in COâ‚‚ storage, hydrogen storage, and petroleum reservoir management
- Policymakers and stakeholders involved in the energy transition and climate strategy
- Anyone interested in data-driven approaches to sustainable subsurface resource use
Event Format: The session will begin with a short introduction to CSSR and its research focus, followed by the scientific presentation and an open Q&A session.
Please note: The introduction and scientific talk will be recorded and made available after the event. The Q&A session will not be recorded to encourage open discussion.
We look forward to welcoming you to this exciting event and to insightful discussions.
